Hi, I’m Payton Cobine and I was asked to give a talk on the
Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the 3rd member of the
Godhead. He is a personage of spirit
without body and flesh. The Holy Spirit
works in perfect unity with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit helps us live righteously and
receive the blessings of the gospel. He “witnesses
of the Father and the Son” (2Nephi 31:18) and reveals and teaches “the truth of
all things” (Moroni 10:5).
Elder Kenneth Johnson of the First Quorum of the Seventy
taught “Stirring within us originate from a divine source and, when followed,
will help to keep us on course, thus protecting us from harmful influences and dangerous
tours.”
We are also taught that the Holy Spirit is the great Comforter. The Holy Spirit offers us companionship and confirmation
that we are following God’s plan and can be as “ a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my
path.” (Psalms 119:105)
To learn from the Spirit we need to listen with our
hearts. President Boyd K. Packer, President
of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said “ The Spirit is a still small voice,
a voice that is felt rather than heard.
It is a spiritual voice that comes into the mind as a thought put into your
heart.” He also said “Inspiration comes
more easily in perfect settings” in places that are quiet, still, peaceable.” Psalms 46:10 says “Be still and know I am
God.” President Packer also taught “while
we may invite the communication it can never be forced. If we try and force it we may be deceived.” Communication from the Spirit carries far
more certainty than any communication we can receive through our natural senses.
Once the Spirit has given us promptings it is our
responsibility to act without delay to those promptings. President James S Monson said “We watch. We wait.
We listen for that still small voice.
When it speaks, wise men and women obey.
Promptings of the Spirit are not to be postponed.” When given promptings of the Spirit we are to
exercise faith and to act. We must move
forward.
Confirmation that we are doing as the Spirit has prompted us
will seldom come at once, more often comes a piece at a time. Confirmation generally comes through packets
of help found along the way. If you are
still unsure if the promptings you have received are of the Spirit, President
Gordon B. Hinkley taught us to ask ourselves this, does the prompting persuade
you to do good, to rise, to stand tall, to do the right thing, to be kind, to
be generous? If so, then it is of the
Spirit.
I testify the Holy Spirit speaks to those who listen and
will give promptings to guide us as long as we listen to the small still voice
and as the prophet Mormon taught “The Spirit and Christ are given to every man,
that he may know good from evil.”
I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
